A question regularly asked by worried airline travellers is this: What is the safest seat in an aircraft? The answer: not one. Mainly because incidents can easily erupt at any area inside the airplane.
Certain individuals are of the viewpoint that the nearer an individual is seated to an emergency exit, the safer one is. Sadly, that is not absolutely accurate. A fire can commence near the emergency exit as in any place inside the plane. And if the emergency exit is jammed, then the man or woman sitting down closest to it is in as much of the same fix as the individual sitting farthest from it.
Regardless of where the traveler is seated inside the airplane, the hazards to ones safety is enormously lessened by one thing above all else: by being alert and aware of ones environment.
Staying alert would mean being watchful and attentive. Be aware of the site of all exits. Pay attention to all pre-flight and in-flight information. Do not consume too much alcohol, if any. Use common sense and try not to do things that will be unfavorable to your own safety, as well as to that of others, such as possessing too many or too heavy carry-on bags, spilling hot beverages, being careless with pointed objects or things with sharpened edges, and the like. Again, use common sense.
Plane accidents are scarce, despite the fears and misgivings surrounding airplane traveling. But if one does indeed take place in the course of the flight, it is especially important for the traveler to keep calm and not to be scared. Fear is a highly transmittable disease. Many deaths in accidents, even those which happened on solid ground, could have been avoided had the panic been contained. So, in case of an incident, take a deep breath, keep the tone of your voice down and follow the line.
There is no such thing as the safest seat in the plane. But any traveler can usually make his or hers the safest seat if the individual chooses to, where ever they is seated. Generating the impression of safety inside of ones self, in the end, it is a mind game.
