Louis Smith of FltOps.com was quoted as saying the next ten years will be the longest and largest pilot hiring boom in the history of the airline industry. It is tough to discredit this statement when you consider there are several other massive players in the aviation industry also envisioning a similar thing. Nearly all articles, blog’s and news stories online are citing figures based on the number of pilot vacancies that will be required over the following 10 to twenty years.
So what is it that is fuelling this boom? Right now we’re seeing higher demand in air travel and a requirement for air cargo transportation on a world basis. Expansion is strong not only for NorthAmerica but also in the Asia pacific market and the middle east. Also we are now seeing many pilots approaching the compulsory retirement age of sixty five which will leave a major shortfall of pilots especially in the States.
Figures published by Boeing make it clear that worldwide there will be a need for more than 450,000 pilots worldwide by 2029. Interestingly around forty percent of this number will be required for the Asia Pacific region. A speaker from Boeing said that we are expecting to have a deficiency in the number or required airline pilots considering the amount of orders and sales, both current and future. One only has to take a look at the orders taken by Airbus and Boeing at the last Paris Airshow to grasp why they have made such a statement.
So has the boom started, are Airlines Hiring now? To my mind that answer to that is totally yes! The job vacancies for pilots in flight global for example have doubled in the previous few months. Leading the charge in the recruitment of pilots at the moment is China. Chinese airlines are forcefully hiring and they’re continuously augmenting incomes and conditions to attract experienced Airline Pilots. Boeing have forecast China will need around 180,000 pilots over the next twenty years.
Boeing have also stated the US will need around 100,000 pilots in the subsequent fifteen to 20 years. Emirates have announced they need another 500 pilots by 2012 and British Airways will hire 800 pilots by 2016. With such aggressive recruiting worldwide taking place it is hard to argue that the boom hasn’t yet started.
