Leaving Las Vegas [DVD]

December 1st, 2011

One of the most critically acclaimed films of 1995, this wrenchingly sad but extraordinarily moving drama provides an authentic, superbly acted portrait of two people whose lives intersect just as they’ve reached their lowest depths of despair. Ben (Nicolas Cage, in an Oscar-winning performance) is a former movie executive who’s lost his wife and family in a sea of alcoholic self-destruction. He’s come to Las Vegas literally to drink himself to death, and that’s when he meets Sera (Elisabeth Shue), a prostitute who falls in love with him–and he with her–despite their mutual dead-end existence. They accept each other as they are, with no attempts by one to change the other, and this unconditional love turns Leaving Las Vegas into a sombre yet quietly beautiful love story. Earning Oscar nominations for Best Director (Mike Figgis), Best Adapted Screenplay (Figgis, from John O’Brien’s novel) and Best Actress (Shue), the film may strike some as relentlessly bleak and glacially pace

Price:£12.99

The Wonderful Mix Of People’s Culture Of Philippines

October 11th, 2010

The people of the Philippines are famous to be a melting pot of a variety of nationalities and each culture of Philippines that comes from these foreign-blooded people show in each Filipino. The influences of the countries that invaded these tropical islands have permeated in the personality of every one, resulting to Chinitos and Mestizos to be present in our midst.  Even before the conquerors of the Philippines arrived, there was a prevailing culture that was being established by the first people who entered these rich lands.  However, since there were the Spanish, American, and the Japanese influences, added with a little percentage of Chinese and Malayan, many now believe that the lifestyle of Filipinos are adapted and inherited from each one.  We got our Catholic faith and our family names from the Spaniards.  From the Americans, we got their love for the English language and their culture of fun in music, film, sports and in food as well.  The Japanese left us a legacy of toughness, their adherence to excellence and discipline, and their food.  Other countries, such as China and Indonesia, gave us their cultural heritage in the ways that they dress, the way they conduct business and in preparing different kinds of Asian food as well.

Because the foreigners have settled here for centuries and years on end, Philippine traditions have been evolving and there are both good and bad traits that we have developed as a people.  But what is more evident are the good Filipino customs and actions, such as the mano, saying po and opo, utang na loob and the bayanihan system.  The Filipino culture is also known for their close family ties, sometimes to the point where families help each other to the end.  This is anchored on the belief that there is strength and unity in the family as the number one unit of society. Unique manners and customs are also prevalent such as cordiality when meeting other people and gift-giving during special, and even during non-special, occasions.  Their attitude towards food is almost sacred, picking up every morsel.  Their dining and table manners see them eat with their hands and their foot lifted up so that the knees can be used as armrest.  In business etiquette and business negotiations, Filipinos are known to be tough negotiators but they are known to take care of their clients. The service that they give is so extraordinary that their businesses are mostly successes.  When it comes to fashion the dress etiquette borders on the conservative to the flirty.  Their sense of fashion is practical and often times light but elegant. The Filipino customs are known worldwide, particularly the in hospitality aspect where Filipinos are well-loved for.

Philippine culture also sees the people having a love and profound understanding of the English language, which makes for a high level of literacy rate.Other countries, such as China and Indonesia, gave us their cultural heritage in the ways that they dress, the way they carry out business and in making different kinds of Asian food as well.  Sports are also considered as a way out of poverty for some people.  Pinoy ethnicity is the only one of its kind and each have their own subcultures and sub dialects.  The culture of Philippines is truly a reflection of the heritage’s richness and contribution to the world.

Paris Vegas Holds a Trove of Barry Bling

July 30th, 2010

Fans of Barry Manilow are having a field day at Paris Las Vegas. Aside from enjoying the music legend’s winning show, they are also discovering lots of “Barry bling.”

A day or two ago, we spied this snappy costume in a fancy display case in the lobby area of the Paris Las Vegas.

Manilow costume

Fancy!

There was some information in the case about the history of the Copa-inspired costume, but since “reading” is a little 1996, we just took another photo to give the costume some context.

Manilow

Classic!

Nearby, the Barry Manilow store offers up its own bling, the kind you can take home with you!

We stopped to chat with the Manilow store mavens, Oscar and Amanda, two die-hard fans who formerly worked at the Manilow store when the show was at the Hilton. They love Barry’s world so much, when the show moved, they moved. We did say “die-hard,” didn’t we?

Manilow

Don't bet against Oscar and Amanda in a game of Barry Manilow trivia.

Oscar and Amanda love what they do, and tend to be the go-to experts about all things Manilow. Fans know these two by name, and often call to find out the latest Manilow-inspired offerings.

The most popular items in the store? T-shirts! Maybe no surprise there.

Also big sellers: The signature, sleek Manilow water bottle container thingy (see the pic below), the exclusive Manilow purse (nobody called it a “Man Purse,” but it seemed fitting), show programs and, of course, Barry Manilow’s CDs, especially his latest, “Beautiful Ballads & Love Songs.”

Manilow

You're gonna need a bigger suitcase.

A great aspect of the Manilow store is that 10% of purchases go to Manilow Music Project.

Manilow

Nice job on the hand modeling, Oscar! Your check's in the mail.

The Manilow Music Project highlights the importance of music programs in schools and donates instruments and materials to school music programs. Find out more.
